Department HQ is feeling a sense of deep loss at the passing of State Hospitality Chairman Harry Carper. He was a great American, proud veteran, and strong VFW supporter, who enjoyed sharing life with his VFW and Aux friends. His obituary and service information is below. Rest in peace, Harry. Harry P. Carper Jr., 69, of McVeytown, passed away at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017 at Geisinger-Lewis- town Hospital.
Born Aug. 12, 1948, in Altoona, he was the son of the late Harry P. Carper, Sr. and Alice (Weaver) Carper.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Patricia A. Carper, on Dec. 17, 2016; and his siblings, Peg Garber, Leona Flick and Leona Carper.
Harry is survived by: his sons, Todd Carper, of Burnham, and Matthew Carper and wife, Janis, of Staunton, Va.; his grandsons, Ethan Carper and Seth Baumgardner, who meant the world to him; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his siblings, Bub Carper and wife, Linda, of Huntingdon, Anna Grace Hegland, of Levittown, Sarah Miller and husband, Barry, of Huntingdon, and Shirley Ott and husband, Glenn, of Longfellow.
Harry was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Vietnam War and had been employed as a truck driver for Class 1 in McVeytown.
He was a member of the B.P.O.E. 663; Lewistown Moose Lodge 143; he was the VFW State Hospitality Chairman and a life member of Standing Stone VFW 1754 along with serving several positions for the state department of the VFW.
Harry loved going camping with his wife in the RV, shooting pool and playing shuffleboard. He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers and the Penn State Nittany Lions.
