For 50 years, the members of VFW Post 1865, and the citizens of Kenosha, WI, honored the VFW National Chaplain and other VFW Chaplains for the service they provide. This was a very special event not duplicated anywhere else in the world. Unfortunately, a few years ago, the tradition stopped when Post leadership changed.
Past National Chaplain Ted Bowers presented the idea of bringing this event to Pennsylvania to his home Post (Richard J. Gross VFW Post 8896) in East Berlin. The East Berlin Post decided to take on the responsibility of honoring the VFW National Chaplain and the work of Chaplains.
The Post held its first event last year, when I served as National Chaplain. This year, the Post will again host the “National Chaplain Event,” May 18-20, 2018.
I would love to have many of our Post and District Chaplains and their spouses, join us that weekend. If you need a place to stay, I recommend the Bechtel Victorian Mansion in East Berlin. The staff can be contacted at www. bechtelvictorianmansion.com.
We will check in on Friday evening and have dinner together. On Saturday, Armed Forces Day, a special guided tour of the Gettysburg battlefield will be led by Chaplain John Waga, an expert in Civil War history as well as the role chaplains and faith played in that national conflict. On Saturday evening, there will be a dinner and program honoring our special guest, Rev. James W. Gray, our National Chaplain. Chaplains, and anyone else who would like to attend, please mark these days on your calendar now and save that weekend.
