Past State Commander Ruth A. Fairchild, a member of New Castle (PA) Post 315 and veteran of Operation Desert Storm, was unanimously elected as the VFW’s National Surgeon on July 25th . Ruth was installed into her new office along with all other National VFW officers during the 2018 National Convention in Kansas City.
Ruth’s service to the Department of PA VFW has included many years serving as the State Surgeon, when she traveled to VA and State medical facilities to ensure that veterans were receiving the best possible care. After her election as National Surgeon, she pledged to do everything she can to use her medical background and her commitment to help National HQ ensure that veterans are treated with respect, dignity and top-quality healthcare services.
Ruth’s other service to the Department has included being elected as the Department’s first female State Commander for the VFW’s 2012-13 program year. She has also held many other VFW positions at the Post, District and State levels.
She enlisted in the U.S Army in 1982 and served 12 years including in Saudi Arabia as part of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. During her service with a medical unit, Fairchild earned many awards and decorations including Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, National Defense and Meritorious Service Medals, Army Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal (twice), Army Achievement Medal (three times) and the Good Conduct Medal. She earned the rank of sergeant and finished her service as an operating room specialist supporting surgeons while they treated battlefield casualties.
She is employed by the Jameson Health System and Jameson Memorial Hospital.
